I think I was about 11 years old when I contracted a case of the Chicken Pox. I had never itched so much in my life!
One day, my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to look at my face in the mirror.
Big mistake.
When I saw all those red, water-filled, raised blisters covering every inch of my skin, I let out a horrified squeal, ran to my bed and put my head under the cover.
I did not ever want to see myself looking that way again.
I was completely and utterly repulsed, and disgusted.
So what’s my point?
When something truly turns us off, we have no desire to gaze at it. We just want to get away as quickly as possible. It repels us.
When Vogue first announced that engaged couple Kanye West and Kim Kardashian were featured on its April 2014 issue, many were aghast, or so they said.
Complaints, outcries against the magazine, and promises to cancel subscriptions to the high-end glossy poured out onto social networking sites.
But according to a sales report, the “Kimye” issue is on course to sell anywhere from 300,000 to 400,000 copies—on par with best-selling past issues featuring Beyoncé Knowles (355,397) and First Lady Michelle Obama (293,798).
As previously reported, 33-year-old Kardashian rose to prominence after her personal sex tape was leaked to the public. Today, her television empire and resulting endorsements, have launched her into the global spotlight.
What can be learned from this?
Many things, but here is what I want to zone in on today.
No matter who rails against the selling of sex and glorification of warped morals, if the public is not bothered enough to look away and stop spending money, Kardashian’s (and women like her) star will continually rise.
Ask yourself: how do I handle entertainment that goes against my values?
Do you listen, watch, or purchase anyway?
Also ask, Am I contributing to the problem or making responsible healthy solutions regarding what I am willing to support?
This is important to think about, otherwise, you will be talking about “what a shame” certain things are, while increasing sales revenue and boosting rankings of the very things of which you disapprove.
