Honored to be in His Presence

I opened my eyes to complete silence and darkness this morning. The first thought that entered my confused mind was, “Why in the world am I awake at this time of morning?” Yesterday was long—full of mommy duties, business meetings, and a studio session to cap off an overly full day. I should have been deep into an exhausted sleep, at least until my alarm went off. But, for some reason, I didn’t feel a hint of tiredness, though I was a bit disoriented. After a few passing moments, however, the cobwebs cleared from my brain and I sensed that familiar nudging— the one my mother, Annie, first talked to me about as a pre-teen. “When the Lord wakes you up like that you should just pray,” she sweetly instructed. One of my long-time friends sends out a daily email that contains a scripture, short lesson, and a prayer to her small mailing list. I've been receiving these messages for years now and everytime I read them, I extract something new and helpful. For me, the word of God is a guide each and everyday. As the scripture says,"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105). The absence of His word is the absence of illumination, and I don't want to be walking around in darkness. Sadly, many people are. Stay Committed to the Vision

My six year old son, Kedar, is a counting enthusiast. He'll count just about anything. No matter how many or few items are in front of him, his fascination with amounts, facts and figures, periodically takes over and he'll just start counting out of the blue. Sometimes, I silently observe his meticulous process, intrigued by how something so simple can be quite that fascinating to him. Well, the other day, Kedar climbed into my bed, picked up a book I had been reading and started pointing to the individual letters on the front cover. "One, two, three, four, five.." he counted, with such intense focus. But, when his baby brother, Kaleb, saw big brother Kedar huddled over this book, Kaleb decided he wanted a playmate. About 8 weeks after I gave birth to our youngest daughter, Kaiah, back in 2001, my husband came home from work with an odd expression on his face. I didn't quite know what was wrong, but from the sinking look in his eyes, I was immediately sure that something was undoubtedly amiss. "I lost my job today," Kenya said, letting the strap from his black leather work bag slide off his shoulder. When the bag hit the floor with a dull thud, I think my heart hit the floor simultaneously. There I was, sitting on the bed, holding our newborn daughter and praying to God I had heard him wrong, or that, at any moment, Kenya would burst into laughter and admit he had been just kidding.
