We must trust in God, not ourselves. For it is He who gives us both the divine mandate and the capacity to fulfill it. But if we charge forward without God's approval, we will most assuredly find ourselves in a situation where our duties exceed our capacity. Read more at www.diannahobbs.com Read more →

I got an email inviting me to an intense coaching session promising to show me (and whoever else was interested) how to become experts at personal branding and consequently, "explode" revenues. The investment? Only somewhere around, uh, 1200 bucks. Well, I know one easy way to help revenues that I'll give out to you for FREE. It's called the "Don't-give-all-your-money-away-to-other-people" Plan. You know what I found interesting about this whole offer? In the sales pitch, which I read through to the end, this individual admitted to gaining major clients without knowing what in the world they were doing. According to them, they had just become proficient at packaging themselves to look like an expert and convince others to pay them money. After I finished the last sentence, I thought... and that's exactly what you're still trying to do. Not gonna... Read more →

"Somebody slap your neighbor and tell 'em, God is turning that thing around!" says the preacher back to the standing audience. So, I turn to my neighbor enthusiastically and give them a high-five as a wave of praise goes through the building. We're uplifted, encouraged, and we all go home with a heightened level of expectation. There's nothing like a good word to stir the soul. But unfortunately, many people take that word, hold on to it tightly, and never do anything to work toward what they're believing God to do in their lives. So then, naturally, between revelation and manifestation, they experience frustration and disillusionment. And they begin feeling like God has failed them somewhere along the way, as if, the word doesn't work. They're right. The word doesn't work without two things: Faith and Work (See James 2:14-26).... Pursuers of purpose, we need to talk about a lesson that dropped on me while observing the recent behaviors of my 11 year old daughter, Kyla. Lately, she has taken a special interest in wearing my clothes and shoes around the house. Every time I turn around, I'll look up and notice that she's confiscated another wardrobe item. My shoes flop on and off her feet. My shirts and dresses hang off her small frame. But still, that doesn't stop her from sporting these ill-fitting items. Of course, this is both perfectly healthy and normal for children as they mature and develop. But once we grow up and begin walking in our purpose, we have to grow out of this habit. Otherwise, it can destroy our destiny. You see, the shoes God has called you to fill, don't fit me.... Read more →

On Saturday, the kids came running upstairs. "Mommy! Mommy! Do you hear it?" I had no idea what they were talking about, because whatever they heard was imperceptible to my ears at the moment. "It's the ice cream truck!" they all shouted in unison with wide eyes. Suddenly, my ears perked up and I could faintly hear the music. I remember how much that very same melody used to excite me when I was a kid. So I rushed to get some money and slip on my shoes. By the time I made it outside, however, the truck was turning the corner and leaving our street. The kids were so disappointed and I felt sorry for them, especially when my six year old son, Kedar, asked me, "Mom, can't you call the ice cream man and ask him to come... Read more →

I read a Robert Byrne quote yesterday that really grabbed my attention. It said, "The purpose of life, is a life of purpose." Isn't it good to know that even in such a vast universe, God has a specific assignment for your life? I genuinely believe that your purpose matters most, but lately, I've been witnessing a disturbing trend. I have been bombarded with emails and offers from Christians promoting tools to help others "become a superstar" and get wealthy in _____ steps. You fill in the blank. I have even come across a sales pitch from a single woman trying to offer advice to married couples. Then, a few days ago, a Christian marketer said, "You're only as good as Google says you are," implying that search engine ranking somehow determines the social ranking of an individual. Instantly, I... Read more →

My husband Kenya used to run cross country back in High School, where he was one of the fastest. When we began dating 15 years ago, in 1995, I noticed that his mother had collected all--and I do mean all--his trophies, medals and other awards and designated a special place in the house for them. It was like a "shrine" to Kenya, celebrating his notable achievements in track and field. She kept them all until she recently passed away. Well, after he graduated, Kenya didn't pursue running any further... just an occasional sprint here and there. Then, once we were married and the kids came along, our schedules got busier, and he pretty much quit that activity altogether. But, the other day, he said he wanted to start up again and recondition his body. He meant it too, because that... Read more →

When I rolled out of bed and let my feet hit the floor on Sunday morning, I immediately noticed how sore they were. After a long, drawn out day of wearing sky high platform stilettos on Saturday, I felt like I might need a gurney to wheel me around on Sunday. The same thing happened to me several months ago when a hectic schedule required me to don the pumps for an extended period. I ended up blogging about my achy feet then too. I guess it's safe to say that I absolutely detest foot aches. So, why not just wear flats, you ask? Well, I fall into the "petite" club where I stand at only 5' 1" tall, which is why I break out the pumps to give me that added lift--at least when I dress up. Well, later... Read more →

A woman named Fatima, (Who granted me permission to share what she told me), emailed me the other day. She's 32 years old and has been in business for two years now, doing freelance writing and some graphic design work on the side also. Fatima let me see some of her writing and design samples and she's excellent at her craft. But still, she can't seem to get steady jobs, or gain a solid foothold in the writing or design industry. She said in her typed message to me, "I feel like I'm stuck in a maze, like I'm so small compared to the big time, successful people, who seem to have all the answers." Although Fatima knows God has gifted her, she's not sure that she'll ever figure out how to maximize her God-given potential and really become fruitful.... Read more →

My six year old son, Kedar, is a counting enthusiast. He'll count just about anything. No matter how many or few items are in front of him, his fascination with amounts, facts and figures, periodically takes over and he'll just start counting out of the blue. Sometimes, I silently observe his meticulous process, intrigued by how something so simple can be quite that fascinating to him. Well, the other day, Kedar climbed into my bed, picked up a book I had been reading and started pointing to the individual letters on the front cover. "One, two, three, four, five.." he counted, with such intense focus. But, when his baby brother, Kaleb, saw big brother Kedar huddled over this book, Kaleb decided he wanted a playmate. "Play cows (cars) with me Kee-dow (Kedar)," Kaleb whined with pleading eyes, while holding two... Read more →

About a week ago, a business colleague of mine told me they had something urgent to speak to me about and they thought I'd be very interested in hearing whatever it was. So, a couple days after receiving the message we finally connected and met up. They sat me down to talk about "an exciting business opportunity" better known as, a new way to make money. I sat there listening intently, although I knew almost immediately that, it wasn't quite my cup of tea. No, it wasn't anything unethical or wrong. It's just that, I'm one of those people who is driven and motivated by purpose, not increased revenue, which is why I pass up lots of "opportunities" that come my way. Well, after about 20 minutes, when they were finished with their pitch (A very good one by the... Read more →

I was talking to a discouraged family friend yesterday. She's a very warm, typically joyful woman, who loves God with all her heart and truly strives to live a focused, mission-driven life. Well, when I spoke to her during a routine conversation, she began opening up to me about what had her feeling depressed and down in the dumps lately. Graciously, she gave me permission to use her dilemma for today's blog post. Well, for more than two and a half years, this friend has been diligently pouring her heart and soul into a business venture. She's a one-woman-operation, so the onus is on her to make the business grow without any outside help. It's certainly not easy doing everything alone. While passionate about what she's called to do, lately, she's been feeling burnt out, particularly because the company's growth... Read more →

A few days ago, my husband Kenya and I watched a movie together about a young, newly married couple that went on an exciting trip to the Grand Canyon. They had found a highly knowledgeable tour guide who agreed to usher them through the expansive mountainous landscape and show them the most beautiful and exotic locations tucked away inside The Canyon. Initially, the tour was going perfectly smooth, until, at the urging of their tour guide, the newlyweds reluctantly went deeper into The Canyon than was advisable. They should have followed their hearts and journeyed back toward the entrance, because once they crossed the threshold of the "safe zone" their guide was bitten by a poisonous snake and subsequently, died. Kenya and I sat there riveted while watching the events unfold... stay with me, I'm going somewhere with this. I... Read more →

I had a dream over the week-end. In it, there was a woman running a cross country race, but she was new to the sport and just couldn't run as quickly as the other participants in the race. When the gunshot was fired, everyone would take off, but no sooner than the race began, she would be left behind by all the faster, stronger, more experienced athletes. This cycle would continue with each race she ran. Even still, this newcomer in my dream didn't give up. Then, during one particular lap in a new race, after about 6 unsuccessful attempts, this determined runner began gaining tremendous speed and momentum. Eventually, she ran so fast that the movement of her legs seemed to be nothing more than a blur and she surpassed every single runner out on that track field. She... Read more →

Timetables are so restrictive, particularly when you put deadlines and ultimatums in place that are neither divinely inspired nor realistic. When you feel like you've gotta have something right now and won't take "wait" for an answer, you inevitably set yourself up for failure and disappointment. So, here's the foundational truth I want you to internalize as you read this post: Just because something doesn't happen according to your timetable doesn't mean God's purpose won't be fulfilled in and through you. The Bible says, "There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand" (Psalm 19:21 NKJV). When your original plan falls short of your expectations, that's no cause to be discouraged. It simply means that your plan was different from God's plan and His plan is the one that must prevail. Quit your worrying. Stop... Read more →

There's a fundamental difference between being content and being complacent. Contentment is a state of being where you accept the reality of your situation, without complaint or resentment. When you're content you work on the things you can change and accept the things you can't, all while refusing to be disheartened. You don't let circumstances steal your joy. When you're complacent, on the other hand, you somehow adopt a "good enough" or "that'll do" mentality. You become satisfied with mediocrity, possessing no real aspirations to do and be more. Contentment is healthy, but complacency...well, that's dangerous. We must ask God to help us strike a balance, so we can say like Paul, "For I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all... Read more →

There are some things you can only learn in the furnace of affliction. There's no other way. So, even though everything in you might be screaming out in anguish, God allows you to go through it. Through the pain, He's maturing you so He can take you to the next dimension of breakthrough, blessing and favor in your life. Is your situation hard to handle in many ways? Do you feel like you can't take it anymore some days? If so, you're simply going through the maturation process. Don't worry. This will only make you better. Sometimes, we wonder why we have to go through such intense warfare. Why can't it be smoother sailing? Why does the storm have to rage? Well, those fierce winds and angry seas serve to strengthen us if we don't give up. When we come... Read more →

I can remember the painful process of enduring labor with all four of my children. Although there was something unique about each pregnancy and subsequent birth, there was one thing that didn't change. Each time the moment came to bring a baby into this world, I would feel unrelenting pressure. Aside from the painful contractions that grew closer together by the hours... minutes... and eventually seconds, that consistent pressure created the urge for me to push. Certainly the pressure didn't feel good, but it was necessary. It was time to give birth and that was one of the ways my body let me know. There was a baby in that birth canal and only if I pushed through the pain and pressure would I get the opportunity to hold my precious newborn. I wonder, what is God trying to get... Read more →

I was working on a project last night that I've been attempting to complete for several months now; time after time I've tried to finish to no avail. Over the past several months, it seemed as if something would always go wrong and hinder my progress. Well, after numerous tries I began thinking, "Maybe I'm not on the right path. Maybe God is trying to tell me something." I had begun subconsciously assuming that the obstacles were indications of my need to possibly quit and take another course. Well, after a frustrating night, I decided to call one of my sisters just to say, "Hey!" But the conversation turned out not to be so casual. "How's the project going?" she asked me in an upbeat tone. "Terrible," I said sounding defeated and dejected. "I'm thinking about quitting." Why did I...

Read more →

I home school my children and sometimes when they have difficulty grasping a concept, I find that they become reluctant to try. As their primary teacher it is my job, not only to help them learn new concepts, but also to build their confidence in their abilities. Because I know that if they believe they can they'll be more inclined to put forth real effort. On the other hand, if they become intimidated by the new challenge, they're less likely to attempt to master it. What about you? When you're unsure of what the outcome will be, do you shy away from the challenge, or do you tackle it head on, knowing that if you just try you'll eventually get it? Think about it. Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by obstacles to the point where you grow defeated in... Read more →

Whenever you think you have God all figured out you get hit with a curve ball. "Huh?" You think to yourself. "This doesn't make sense, and it certainly doesn't fall in line with my assumptions!" Precisely. God's methods are a lot like the Rubik's Cube, a mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture, Ernő Rubik. Better yet, His ways are elusive like the modern Sudoku puzzles. Each is simply--or not-so-simply...puzzling. (No pun intended:-) Yet, there is a fundamental difference to keep in mind. With these man-made brain teasers, if you keep working at it, without quitting in the process, the answers will emerge eventually. You just have to remain patient, focused, and diligent. God, on the other hand, is a Sovereign Being. He's all-knowing and all-powerful. Unlike the Rubik's Cube and Sudoku, you can't... Read more →

Have you ever been watching TV and couldn't get the remote control to work? Did you find yourself getting frustrated because you couldn't change the channel... or you couldn't turn the TV off or on? How long did you sit there beating up the remote and complaining? Did it occur to you that you could just get up and change the channel or turn the TV off/on manually? Isn't it funny how dependent we become on modern conventions of technology, people, and things, when we possess the power to personally change our circumstances? It's just a matter of getting up and changing it ourselves! Here's another scenario. Do you find yourself "vegging out" when you should be working? Been procrastinating a little too much lately? I think we're all guilty of it sometimes. We avoid doing things, even when we... Read more →

My husband loves technology. Although I do understand quite a bit about it, I'm not fanatical. My dear husband, on the other hand, loves gadgets. Well, he recently bought me a new cell phone. This would give some people great joy, but not me. I'm a simple kind of gal. As long as I can make and receive calls, I'm happy. You see, my problem is this. There's always the dreaded "learning curve" with new phones. The keypad is different. The controls are unique. And whenever I get a new phone, I have to re-learn everything. The other day, my sister sent me a text message. When I didn't respond, she called me. I told her, "Yeah, I got the message, but I don't know how to respond on this new phone." It's pretty intricate. Not only do I have... Read more →

God is about to introduce you to some new roles in your life, but that doesn't mean He wants you to change what's unique about you. Focus on celebrating your uniqueness, and God will show you how to excel even in unfamiliar territory. You see, whenever you try to be someone else you lose the essence of what makes you special. Don't ever be ashamed of the person God made you to be. Otherwise, you'll end up doing whatever you think is necessary to mold the perceptions of others. You'll be whoever you think you need to be in that moment. That's both dangerous and unhealthy. Remember, anything or anyone requiring you to be someone other than the person God destined you to be, is not for you. In cases like these, try changing your associations instead of changing yourself.... Read more →
