We must trust in God, not ourselves. For it is He who gives us both the divine mandate and the capacity to fulfill it. I was talking to my younger sister, Shante, yesterday. We chatted about a few things, but one thing in particular stuck out for me. She told me about how she used to wonder what she had to offer God. For a while, Shante had trouble identifying what specifically in her life the Lord wanted to use to make a difference in the world. She wasn’t certain about which gifts, talents, or abilities could be useful to Him. Although God would often place it on Shante’s heart to pray for others, she didn’t think anything much of it. For a long time, she didn’t realize she was called to be an intercessor—one who consistently prays to God on behalf of others. Now she knows the value of that gift and how important she is to the Kingdom. As I sat listening... Read more →

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas—a very, very white one. All day long it’s been snowing! Although I love the snow—it’s so gorgeous—when the wind starts blowing it around, it can be quite difficult to see while driving. And when you combine low visibility with icy roads, that can make for some pretty treacherous travel conditions. Hopefully the flurries will stop soon, because I need to run a few errands this evening in preparation for a new video shoot. Originally, my label set up a shoot for my song, Purpose. Remember that? Everything went so well and many of you have been inquiring about when that music video will be released. Well, there has been a change of plan and that video is no longer being released. But…there is a new song. And it’s coming at you soon.... Read more →

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while now, you have probably read previous posts about how I wasn’t at all popular in High School. Coming from a large family, we didn’t have much. So my clothes were hand-me-downs. We couldn’t afford the latest trends. And I was rocking “buddies”—which was the special title given to “no name” sneakers. I remember being laughed at, mocked, and teased relentlessly by my peers. I just didn’t fit in. One year, probably around my junior year of High School, when the yearbook titles were given out, I wanted so much to be recognized. Being labeled “Most Likely” to do something… anything… would have made my entire year. But nope. Didn’t happen. I felt so invisible, like an outsider. I was silently disappointed and wondered what I lacked that others who received all... Read more →

A couple years back, my little sister Alesha, who is an amazing vocalist, entered into a Christian talent competition. I found out late that she would be competing and my schedule was jam packed. I really couldn’t afford to take time out for it (It was an all day event!), but I wanted to be there for my baby sis. Hesitantly, I rearranged my schedule and cancelled a few things to devote my day to supporting Alesha. I remember sitting in that theater looking around at a sea of red chairs feeling a little anxious about all the work I needed to be doing. But eventually, I relaxed and allowed myself to just be in the moment. Although Alesha didn’t win the competition, she did an amazing job, we had a blast and met some very interesting people—one of them... Read more →

I got a message on Facebook yesterday from a woman who had been trying to contact the consulting firm I own, Hobbs Ministries. For some reason, she could not get through to my staff on the office phone lines and no one had responded to her email message. After reading through her email I felt so, so awful. I immediately sent an apology and directed her to the appropriate staff contact. When I looked into the situation further, I had my assistant Ari check for this woman’s original email, which had somehow gotten caught in our spam filters. Well, Ari set up a phone consultation with her and I felt led to take the call personally. Initially, I focused on giving her some guidance about developing her brand. Before we hung up, however, the conversation shifted. She told me about... Read more →

Whenever advertisers send toy catalogs to our house, my husband Kenya and I quickly toss them out. We have 4 children and do not believe in spending money frivolously. No ma’am. No sir. So the unsolicited kiddie mags get tossed out as soon as they get pulled out of the mailbox. I know all too well how skilled these toy makers are at separating moms and dads from their money by getting to the kids first. It’s a tried and true method to get parents to spend big bucks. Well guys, Kenya slipped up the other day and ruined our fool-proof plan. When a catalog mysteriously showed up in the mail—which has been happening a lot more frequently lately with the holiday season right up on us—he mistakenly left it out. And one of the munchkins found it before he... Read more →

All day long, since I woke up this morning, I’ve been dealing with a dull nagging headache and a twinge of discomfort in my throat. I also have a nice amount of work screaming out, “Finish me!” Well, a little while ago, someone got in touch with me just to let me know that I had impacted their life through my music and ministry. Although the light aching in my head and throat didn’t subside after getting that message, the reminder came at a perfect time. It gave me the boost I need to press through my slightly-under-the-weather-day and carry out the assignments I have committed myself to completing. After all, someone needs to be encouraged. You know, after that person reached out to me, what they had to say made me think about the importance of using our lives…... Read more →

Yesterday, I learned from my record label that, this month, I have to do another video shoot for my upcoming album, for which I’ll be disclosing the release date soon. I hope you’ll be able to come to the CD release concert in Buffalo, New York next year! It promises to be an awesome time of ministry and fellowship. Well, the song Purpose, which is really close to my heart, is the single the team and I will be shooting the video for. I posted it below just in case you’ve never heard it. Now, if you’ve listened to the song, you know it’s about how my life is meaningless if I’m not in God’s will. I wrote it from a place of distress as I was torn about actively pursuing the music ministry. Before surrendering to God’s will, deep... Read more →

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin…” (Zechariah 4:10 NLT) “Look mommy I made an ice cream truck!” my 7-year-old son, Kedar, shouted out excitedly during arts and crafts time. Sure enough, he had sketched a detailed picture of a box-shaped four-wheel vehicle complete with images of cones of every kind. “Alright now!” I said reaching my hand out for a high-five. “You did an awesome job!” “Thank you!” Kedar’s eyes beamed with pride as he flashed a wide grin showing off his snags on both sides of his upper row of teeth. Then my 4-year-old, Kaleb, said, “Me too mommy! Look! I made a ice-keem truck too!” I looked at Kaleb’s scribbled picture. “See the cone right there mommy?!” he pointed to an odd shape he had drawn. Of course I... Read more →

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." (Matthew 13:44) Earlier today, I was running around looking for my Blackberry. Unfortunately, the ringer was on silent, so I couldn't just call it from a land line and determine its whereabouts by listening. I looked everywhere! So, after being frustrated for about 10 minutes with my fruitless search, I stood in the middle of the floor scanning the room with squinted eyes, with my hands on my hips. "Wait a minute. What's that?" I mumbled, feeling a bulge. I shook my head and laughed when I discovered the phone was in my pocket the whole time! I forgot I had slipped it in there... Read more →

Pursuers of purpose, we need to talk about a lesson that dropped on me while observing the recent behaviors of my 11 year old daughter, Kyla. Lately, she has taken a special interest in wearing my clothes and shoes around the house. Every time I turn around, I'll look up and notice that she's confiscated another wardrobe item. My shoes flop on and off her feet. My shirts and dresses hang off her small frame. But still, that doesn't stop her from sporting these ill-fitting items. Of course, this is both perfectly healthy and normal for children as they mature and develop. But once we grow up and begin walking in our purpose, we have to grow out of this habit. Otherwise, it can destroy our destiny. You see, the shoes God has called you to fill, don't fit me.... Read more →

I read a Robert Byrne quote yesterday that really grabbed my attention. It said, "The purpose of life, is a life of purpose." Isn't it good to know that even in such a vast universe, God has a specific assignment for your life? I genuinely believe that your purpose matters most, but lately, I've been witnessing a disturbing trend. I have been bombarded with emails and offers from Christians promoting tools to help others "become a superstar" and get wealthy in _____ steps. You fill in the blank. I have even come across a sales pitch from a single woman trying to offer advice to married couples. Then, a few days ago, a Christian marketer said, "You're only as good as Google says you are," implying that search engine ranking somehow determines the social ranking of an individual. Instantly, I... Read more →

My husband Kenya used to run cross country back in High School, where he was one of the fastest. When we began dating 15 years ago, in 1995, I noticed that his mother had collected all--and I do mean all--his trophies, medals and other awards and designated a special place in the house for them. It was like a "shrine" to Kenya, celebrating his notable achievements in track and field. She kept them all until she recently passed away. Well, after he graduated, Kenya didn't pursue running any further... just an occasional sprint here and there. Then, once we were married and the kids came along, our schedules got busier, and he pretty much quit that activity altogether. But, the other day, he said he wanted to start up again and recondition his body. He meant it too, because that... Read more →

Recently, a few of my sisters got together and decided they were going on a health kick. No fried foods; no sweet drinks, just water; no eating anything after supper; and at least 30 minutes of cardio everyday. They, along with my mom, have been going for walks around the park for a few days now. So yesterday, my younger sister invited me out to walk. I agreed to go; I threw on a T-shirt and some sweats, but couldn't find my only pair of sneakers. Well, since I needed some new ones pretty badly anyway, we all stopped by a local department store. I quickly purchased a pair to walk in and we were on our way. When we got to the park, I noticed there were some people walking on the same path as we were and yet,... Read more →

I would longingly gaze out of the window, desperately missing the way things once were. I was around 15 years old when our family moved to another house. It wasn't that far from my old neighborhood, but according to city mapping, our street fell just outside city lines and was considered the suburbs. So, you know what that meant... I was was forced into changing schools. Now, I had been accustomed to having predominantly African American peers, which is typical for public schools in the inner city. As you might imagine, it was jolting to be uprooted from what I was used to and be thrust into a suburban public High School. It was a totally new and foreign environment. There were only 4 black kids in the whole school--2 of them being me and my big sister, Shavette. Needless... Read more →
