Oh the irony! Just after writing Wednesday’s blog post about my hometown of Buffalo, New York, being so awesome at snow removal, we got hit with a snow storm that crippled traffic and resulted in a bunch of drivers being stranded on highways. This treacherous Lake Erie-fed storm started on Wednesday and continued strong through Thursday, burying parts of Buffalo and some of our suburbs under two to three feet of snow! Dozens of schools canceled classes Thursday and again on today. It’s been a crazy couple of days. The impact of the storm has gotten the attention of national news and is being covered on CNN and other network stations. Interestingly, this isn’t even the worst storm to hit our city. My lawn and bushes are covered with snow flurries today and I’m so excited about it. What a wonderful way to welcome the first day of December. Now it really looks like the Christmas season is here! The snow beautifully complements the seasonal decorations. The gently falling flakes add a quiet serenity to the neighborhood. Being a Buffalo, New York native, I’m used to snow…and lots of it. The kids play in it and I know how to carefully drive in it without fear. It’s just a part of my reality. Good morning! I’m so happy to be back from my “blogging vacation”—I missed you guys. I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving last week. Unfortunately, I got sick right on Thanksgiving morning. Can you believe that?! I couldn’t even eat that big delicious meal I worked so hard on the night before. I was in bed in horrible shape. For the first few hours after waking up and feeling like I’d been run over by a truck, I was in denial. I thought, “There is just no way I can be getting sick on Thanksgiving. I spoke to a friend from college the other day. We hadn't talked in a good long while. But during the conversation she began opening up about some things that had transpired in her life. She had dropped out of school, made some bad financial moves and ruined her credit, and gotten into a terrible relationship along the way. She was really down and depressed about all of it. She beat herself up over it constantly too. She told me it got to the point where she didn't even want to get out of bed in the morning sometimes. It's Monday again! I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing week-end. As always, I'm excited to kick off another week of blogging with you, my Daily Cup family. If you've been reading the blog for at least a couple of months, then you've likely read about my skin woes and the changes I've been through with my Eczema. If you're not familiar, you can get a crash course right here. Well, I'm currently nursing my skin back to health, after making a poor choice... again. I was talking to a discouraged family friend yesterday. She's a very warm, typically joyful woman, who loves God with all her heart and truly strives to live a focused, mission-driven life. Well, when I spoke to her during a routine conversation, she began opening up to me about what had her feeling depressed and down in the dumps lately. Graciously, she gave me permission to use her dilemma for today's blog post. Well, for more than two and a half years, this friend has been diligently pouring her heart and soul into a business venture. I remember when I was younger, I used to think that being saved and loving God precluded me from going through certain things. Somehow, I saw God as this shield from everything painful, uncomfortable, unfair and underhanded. I'm not sure why, but I reasoned in my mind that divine discernment, protection and favor would get me through life unscathed. I didn't realize that Christ's redemptive work on the cross ensured the rebirth of my spirit and the salvation of my soul... but did not, in any way, exclude me from suffering and affliction. I didn't expect to ever be betrayed, misunderstood, misused, or blindsided by life; as if His presence with me acted as an invisible force field, so that trouble would just bounce off of me and like a boomerang, return from whence it came. Hey guys, my computer issues are still not quite resolved. It looks like the problem is pretty serious, but as several of you noted on yesterday, I think the enemy is just mad that you and I have decided to "speak up and stand up" for what's right. I appreciate the encouragement too; I really do. I know that this blog is reaching souls for the Kingdom and empowering you and me to fulfill our purpose in the earth. Because of that, we can expect opposition along the way, but one thing I know is that, God is forever and always in control. Amen? I often hear longtime friends of my family say to me, "Dianna, I remember you when you were just a tiny thing in ponytails and bobby socks." This statement is usually accompanied by a wide grin and an embarrassing follow-up story. Some folks even have photographic evidence of my early days in church, with those off-centered ponytails, ruffly dresses, lace socks over opaque tights, with the scuffed up black patent leather shoes. It's always quite funny to look back on those moments. Somehow, those images always conjure up some kind of memory of growing up in the church, no matter how vague.
