They Need Your Example!

I received a heartbreaking email from a close longtime family friend named Chantel. Her 20-year-old cousin was gunned down and murdered on the East side of Buffalo, NY yesterday. The family is heartbroken and devastated! I’m praying for them today. When I received the awful news last night, I began to think about how important it is for us to let our light shine in this world. Many young men and women are groping in darkness, trying to find their identity and a true sense of belonging through gangs and other illicit activities. Some don’t even realize they are lost, while others just don’t know any other way to live and can’t imagine being free. It’s the week of Thanksgiving and I’m already excited about Thursday—can’t wait to cook and spend time with my family. I’m making honey and pineapple glazed ham, greens, cabbage, candied yams, homemade macaroni and cheese, banana pudding (My specialty!), and a few other delicious dishes! No turkey, though. I know, I know. That probably seems odd to most of you reading this. But, I never have really enjoyed the famous bird for some reason. Neither has my husband Kenya. Resistance Builds Strength

My husband Kenya came home from Walmart smiling the other night. "Look what I got for us babe," he said grinning widely while pulling two boxes out of the white and blue plastic bag. Resistance bands. For working out. Yay. :-/ *Birds chirping* Can you sense my excitement? I hate resistance bands. Those little flat strips of rubber that provide increased resistance to build strength, hurt. Badly. Initially, I tried to feign excitement, until I could no longer hide my intimidation. "Those are so hard to use honey," I told him, hoping not to sound too ungrateful for my, uh, "gift" he had excitedly purchased. Kenya was still cheesing while testing out the rubbery torture tubes. I ended up over in the shoe department, instead of staying focused on what I was really supposed to be doing at the mall over the week-end. See, I had to sing at a banquet for the LEWAC (Lasting Education for Women, Adults, and Children) this past Saturday. The theme of the event was, "Hattitude-Hats Off to Heart Health!" From the theme, you've likely figure out that wearing a hat for this event called "hattitude" was necessary. It wasn't optional. Hats were a part of the mandatory dress code. Well, I'm not typically a hat wearer. My mother, on the other hand, dons the most beautiful, sparkling creations... and looks flawless while doing so. My husband Kenya and I were talking for hours last night. For some reason we ended up reminiscing about our High School days. We graduated from the same school, although we attended four years apart. We talked and laughed about our old teachers, schoolmates and lots of other things. Then, the focus of the conversation shifted to my academic performance in High School. Let's just say it was not very good and I made really poor grades in math and science... extremely poor. Those two subjects greatly intimidated me and ended up being my weakest. But, when it came to English and Spanish, which were my two favorite subjects, I maintained an A average. I felt confident, capable, and competent in those two areas... and it showed. The Way Up is Down

When I rolled out of bed and let my feet hit the floor on Sunday morning, I immediately noticed how sore they were. After a long, drawn out day of wearing sky high platform stilettos on Saturday, I felt like I might need a gurney to wheel me around on Sunday. The same thing happened to me several months ago when a hectic schedule required me to don the pumps for an extended period. I ended up blogging about my achy feet then too. I guess it's safe to say that I absolutely detest foot aches. So, why not just wear flats, you ask? Yesterday, I was sharing on Facebook about how a colleague of mine, who just so happens to be a fellow believer, attempted to coerce me into getting on board with something that goes 100% against my belief system. "This is a great networking opportunity," they said with gleaming eyes, clearly excited about the prospects. When I brought up the fact that , not just mine, but their faith also was in direct opposition with what was being proposed, they said, "Of course we know in our hearts what we believe, but that's just a part of the business." I very much enjoy films that act as character studies, by delving into the psyches of the main characters. I suppose I'm intrigued by human nature and understanding the motivating factors behind the actions of people, both bad and good. Recently, I watched an autobiographical film about the life of Enid Blyton, one of the most successful twentieth century writers of children's fiction. I was in my bedroom when I heard a loud crash coming from the direction of the bathroom. Yesterday, I walked into the kids' play area to find them all dutifully cleaning and organizing. I leaned against the wall and watched in silence, as they hummed happily, working together cooperatively (Except for 3 year old Kaleb who was bent on trashing the place and pulling out each toy the older ones tried putting away). For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what had gotten into the kids, that they voluntarily decided to go on an impromptu cleaning spree. The List...

CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST HERE AGAIN and if you're a faithful reader of The Daily Cup of Inspiration, you already know how my children love to make lists: Snack Lists, Birthday Wish Lists... and now, Christmas Lists. Since Christmas is next week (Can you believe how quickly this year is passing?) I was going over their lists to make sure my husband and I remembered everything they so eagerly presented to us on fully illustrated pieces of paper, like the one pictured above, which belongs to my six year old son, Kedar. As you can see, he utilized his "artistic skills" to communicate, while his older sister translated his images into text. Too cute. I'M OFTEN ASKED to give my commentary about current events of the day, by sharing my opinion regarding popular reality shows, talent competitions, talk shows and the like. But here's the thing... I don't really watch any of that stuff, because for the most part, what's perpetuated through these shows, goes against my core belief system. So, I tend not to have anything to share. You see, there are many things that draw the majority in, that repel me. I'm not a fan of a lot of the ridiculous things on reality television, that the masses rave about. My values, core focus and mission in life, greatly differs from the perspectives presented through these shows. I bristle against their contrary themes and messages. Besides, most of what we see on "reality" TV isn't real anyway. A lot of this foolishness... Read more →
