Because He Sent You

2010 is almost gone. That’s hard to believe, though I am very excited about what’s to come. As always, when I prepare to enter a new year, I reflect back on all that has happened and ponder the lessons learned from each situation. Over the past week or so, God has been really dealing with me about one specific bit of wisdom that has been a huge blessing in my life, and I want to share it with you. Move Forward

On the way home from a speaking engagement last evening, I was chatting with my mother, who came along with me. Initially, we were just sharing about how awesome God is and how mightily he showed up in the service. And then, the conversation switched back to us reminiscing about me growing up in my dad's church singing, serving as head of several departments, and teaching the word of God from the time I was about 11 years old. All throughout my teenage years into my early twenties, I served under my father until he, my mom, and younger siblings relocated. Some things Don't Mix

When I was growing up, I remember how my mom would take time out to teach me life skills that would benefit me in the future. She knew that one day, I'd leave home and go out into the world to make a life for myself, so naturally, my mother wanted me to be equipped to do that effectively. Aside from spiritual principles, Mom made sure I knew how to wash those dishes, clean up that house, cook up a good meal, stitch up and patch up holes, and also wash clothes without shrinking them, or making them dingy. One of the fundamental lessons I learned about washing, was the importance of separating the "lights" from the "darks," because if you put them in the wash together, some of the dye from the dark clothes could soak into the light... Know Your Calling

I would longingly gaze out of the window, desperately missing the way things once were. I was around 15 years old when our family moved to another house. It wasn't that far from my old neighborhood, but according to city mapping, our street fell just outside city lines and was considered the suburbs. So, you know what that meant... I was was forced into changing schools. Now, I had been accustomed to having predominantly African American peers, which is typical for public schools in the inner city. As you might imagine, it was jolting to be uprooted from what I was used to and be thrust into a suburban public High School. It was a totally new and foreign environment.
