A close family member is going through a very serious and trying situation. When I first heard about it, the news hit me like a ton of bricks. So yesterday, I picked up the phone to check in, not really knowing what to expect. I prepared myself to hear sadness in her voice and to be a listening ear in case she wanted to vent.
What I expected and what I got were two different things entirely.
Not only was the anticipated sadness nonexistent, but her words were full of joyful exuberance and thanksgiving. We ended up laughing and glorifying God.
With all that’s going on, not once did my dear relative complain. She didn’t ask why me? Nor did she express grief, sorrow, or anger of any kind—though any person would have totally understood if she felt inclined to do so.
Rather, this courageous woman of God focused on what could have been worse about her situation and opted to rejoice in the Lord.
I know you don't know what she's going through, but trust me when I tell you, it has been an ordeal. Just thinking about her faith and gratefulness in this season inspires me!
Even though she could have zoned in on all the negative things, she opted instead to concentrate and meditate on the goodness of Jesus in the midst of it all. Our conversation really sparked something within my heart.
It was a teachable moment indeed.
When I hung up, I thought about how her attitude serves as a perfect model for us. If we can keep an attitude of gratitude when we're right in the middle of a storm, we'll maintain our joy and peace in the toughest times.
This is why I feel led to add Philippians 4:4 NIV to your cup of inspiration today. It says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”
When you drink down the contents of your cup, though you might be in a hard place, you’ll still find a reason to rejoice, no matter what. Through heartache and pain you will yet open your mouth and put Psalm 34:1 KJV into practice: “I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Your praise will no longer be contingent upon your circumstances. But in all things, everyday, in every situation, you will give thanks, knowing it is the will of God for your life (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
Even when you could complain, you won't, because you'll be too busy shouting and rejoicing over all the good things that far outweigh the bad!
Lord, if I look for it, I can always find a reason to complain. But today, I make a conscious decision to look for a reason to rejoice, no matter what! So, right now, I’m taking a moment to thank You for Your goodness in the midst of it all. For You, oh Lord, are yet worthy to be praised, now and forevermore! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
As always, thanks for reading and until next time... may today's cup of inspiration uplift, encourage, and empower you!
