I celebrated my husband Kenya’s birthday over the week-end. We had a great time. One of the best things about birthday celebrations—both his and mine—is the part where we receive gifts from the children. Only, in our house, the children don’t buy us anything.
Instead, they make us gifts using only their creative imaginations. We get cards, paper dolls, and books they’ve made. All sorts of sweet little things. It’s always so cool to see what they come up with. So anyway, our daughter Kaiah who is 9 years old, knocked on our bedroom door Saturday—the day before Kenya’s birthday. When she came inside, she was holding a white piece of paper.
“Daddy, I need you to hold your head down please,” she announced.
“Okay baby,” Kenya responded and hung his head low. Kaiah very gently placed a crown she had cut out and glued together on top of her dad’s head. Then, after she had adjusted it to her liking, with a wide grin, Kaiah stepped back and observed.
“Perfect,” she said. Then, our satisfied little crown-maker walked back over to Kenya and ever-so-gingerly removed the paper crown from off her father’s head.
“I just wanted to make sure you could fit your surprise gift,” she said and bopped out of the room happily.
After that, Kenya and I cracked up, trying hard not to laugh too loudly.
Some surprise, huh?
For someone like me, getting “surprises” like Kaiah’s would be ideal, because I don’t like suspense at all! I like to know all the details up front so I can see precisely how things will pan out in the future. Too bad God doesn’t follow Kaiah’s methods.
You and I have to “wait until our birthday” before we see the full manifestation of God’s plan. In other words, the Lord doesn’t reveal every aspect of His will and purpose for our lives in advance.
Just like natural birthdays, before that date comes, we usually know we’re going to receive something, right? Some of us even put in special requests to ensure we get what we want. But the truth is, we don’t know with 100% certainty what we will receive until our birthday arrives.
Well, not unless we’ve got Kaiah hanging around. ;-)
I encourage you to wait on the Lord. Trust His timing. And know that when the fullness of time comes, God will reveal His will and plan, and it will be “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think…” (Ephesians 3:20)
Today’s Prayer: Lord, although I would like to know Your full plan for my life, help me to be still and trust You while I await full revelation. I thank You right now for confidence and assurance that You have good things in store for me when the fullness of time comes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
