In today’s podcast, that you can listen to HERE, I talked about ministering at a church in my city a couple of weeks ago. At the end of the sermon, God gave me a prophetic word for one of the men who came to the altar. Before service was over, I received confirmation in front of the whole assembly that God’s word had come through me with clarity, precision and accuracy.
I felt grateful to be used by God.
When I was a teenager, I first discovered the prophetic gifting God had given me. I didn’t understand why He chose me or allowed me to see people’s lives unfold. But I knew He was working and moving through me.
I come from a family of prophets where the five-fold ministry is in operation.
The five-fold ministry comes from Ephesians 4:11. It revolves around five offices: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. I believe God still moves supernaturally through these offices today, just as He did in Bible days.
I know some reject miracles and prophetic utterances nowadays, but because of my firsthand experiences and being used as a vessel, I know, without any doubt, God shows up in this way. Some think demonstrations of the supernatural stopped after Jesus ascended into Heaven, but nope. The Lord is still revealing Himself. I am a living witness. He is alive and well. He yet does the impossible and makes Himself known.
One of my favorite biblical accounts that demonstrates the great lengths God goes to just to reveal Himself to His creation is found in John 4:1-15. That's where the story of the woman at the well is. You may know it very well.
A Samaritan woman went out to a well to draw water and noticed Jesus sitting there. He asked her for a drink. She was surprised that this Jewish man was even addressing her, because Jews did not associate with Samaritans, as she noted in verse 4.
The divide went all the way back to the time when the Assyrians captured Samaria in 2 Kings 17-18. After being taken into captivity, the once pure Israelites became tainted by their foreign captors. The Samaritans intermarried, produced children and got mixed up in ancient false religions. Thus, they were considered impure by other Jews after returning to their homeland. They were frowned upon and looked down upon.
The Samaritan woman at the well's confusion about the essence of true, righteous, God-honoring worship, led Jesus to tell her in verse 22, “You Samaritans worship what you do not know.”
He was just stating fact.
The Samaritans were so misguided, they had even erected their own temple on Mount Gerizim. They combined the worship of Yahweh, with the worship of other idols. They blended it all together and didn't see the issue.
This made them outcasts.
Jews avoided Samaritans like an infectious disease. But Jesus knew this confused woman had a need. She had issues with faith, identity and even love. The Bible says she had been married five times and was, at the time, living with a man who wasn’t her husband.
Although religious folks turned their noses up, racially discriminated against Samaritans and viewed them as no more than rebels, and misfits, Jesus was different. He saw her through eyes of compassion.
The day Jesus showed up, it was a surprise to her. She had no idea that she was about to receive a desperately-needed, amazing gift. By the time Jesus finished witnessing to this woman, re-educating her on matters of faith, and supernaturally revealing the details of her life story, she was blown away. She was changed. She had a new perspective. She understood that Jesus was the “Living Water”—the Messiah—who could quench the thirsting and longing of her soul.
What she had been seeking all her life-- true love, real connection with God and satisfaction--showed up out of the blue. She met Jesus broken, confused and lost. She came away from the encounter whole, with clarity about her identity, and purpose. Her whole life got turned around that day and she was beside herself with joy. She went and spread the news about Jesus.
When Christ revealed Himself to her, everything shifted in a moment. The same thing is about to happen to someone reading this post. The Lord is turning your whole life around.
