Inevitably, one of my cute amateur petitioners with puppy dog eyes develops a sudden body ache; allergy-induced itching spell; new interest in a very old scab; or some other wacky, out-of-the-blue physical issue requiring my full attention.
It really doesn’t matter what the pint-sized schemers come up with to win my sympathy. They figure, as long as the phantom problem is enough to evoke concern, they’re totally in with their unsuspecting mother.
I’m not sure, however, if they do this subconsciously or consciously.
Either way, Kedar, 8, and Kaleb, 5, have each discovered that they’re more likely to get an affirmative response to their requests once they get me feeling all, “What’s the matter with mommy’s little guy?”
They are highly skilled con artists I tell you. ;-)
But guess what?
I’m hip to their game.
No, no…wait. Hold your applause please ladies and gentlemen. I can’t take complete credit for my awakening. I say this as I place one hand in the air, the other over my chest, and hang my head for added drama.
For a while there, I was the President of “Mommy is a Sucker, Inc.” until my insightful husband Kenya helped snap me out of my oblivious haze.
He accomplished this, in part, with sign language. Once I had been taken for a ride, Kenya would place his left thumb and pointer finger on his forehead in the shape of an “L” for loser. Then he would call me “suckerrrrr” and inform me that I had been played like a fiddle.
After that, he’d make me laugh until I could hardly breathe as he impersonated me, placing special emphasis on all the ways I’d been hoodwinked, duped, bamboozled, led astray, and “outsmarted by nincompoops.”
Those mocking sessions, as they accumulated over time, sharpened me a bit. My dear hubby repeatedly revealed the playbook of the two brotherly cohorts that stuck together like glue.
Once I was illuminated, I found my gulliblity hilarious and was empowered to make changes.
As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power.”
Once their tactics and methods were exposed, I was on heightened alert. Just like the clear Ziplock baggies that hold their snacks, I could finally see right through the kids’ veiled attempts to distract, weaken, and then reel me in.
Okay, so, I still get played from time to time (I confess!). But hey, those instances are fewer and less frequent.
The important thing is I can now see and recognize patterns I could not before, and that’s the important thing… not just for me, but for you too.
I like to tell people all the time, “If you don’t know better, you can’t do better.” So don’t waste time regretting, resenting, and reliving mistakes or poor choices you made before you knew better, right?
That’s such a waste of time, especially because you can’t undo big or small blunders. What's done is done. Just thank God you know better now and because of that, you’re able to do better.
Whatever your history, that’s not the whole story. You have so much life left to live.
Because of all you’ve been through, you have more experience. You have gained invaluable wisdom from mistakes, and matured so much. Your perceptions, conceptions, and reactions have even evolved. Though you’re still a work in progress, as we all are, your level of understanding has increased. You are now able to walk in wisdom.
Focus on the fact that you could still be where you were. But look how far God has brought you! Where you were once naïve and blind, you have received clarity through divine insight.
And that is a reason to rejoice.
Today, I want to stir even more wisdom into your cup of inspiration. That’s why I’m adding James 1:5 NIV into the blend today. It says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
As you drink down the contents of your cup today, you’ll be reminded that God is not a fault-finder, He is a wisdom-giver. He forgives our wrongs, develops our character, and helps us move forward in divine revelation.
Thank God for that!
For the rest of your life, as long as you draw close to God, serve Him, and seek Him for wisdom, He’ll make sure you know everything that pertains to living the abundant life He’s destined for you.
God, I thank You for the deposits of wisdom you have made into my life. I can clearly see all the ways You have transformed me for the better and helped me grow beyond past mistakes and pitfalls. I pray that You will continue to pour Your wisdom into me, so that I can live abundantly, according to Your plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
As always, thanks for reading and until next time... may today's cup of inspiration uplift, encourage, and empower you!
