I've often said, in order for you to be walked on you must first lie
down; and lying down becomes a bit of a habitual cycle when you
struggle with poor self image. Like a doormat with the word "WELCOME" boldly written across it, thinking too lowly of yourself gives off the wrong message to whomever it is that thrives off of taking advantage of you.
Talk back to me now; that's good teaching. Seriously, when you don't demand respect, essentially you're saying: "I welcome mistreatment. I welcome insensitive comments and condescending actions. It pleases me to be treated any kind of way. No... really... I don't mind. Please walk on me. That's what I'm here for."
I know I might not get many amens on this one, but it's the truth anyhow. Now, certainly, I don't know anyone who would sincerely say any of those things aloud. Nonetheless, if one's actions say it... actions speak MUCH louder than words.
Most folks don't realize that their actions set the precedent... not their speech.
So, how can we avoid the doormat syndrome?
There's only one way. We have to begin seeing ourselves as God sees us.
Listen. Stop pining for others to love and respect you until you first love and respect yourself. That might be tough to swallow, but if you go ahead and swallow it down it'll do you good.
Until you recognize that your worth and value comes from no one but God, you'll continue to seek after other people and things to approve and validate you.
You are who God says you are. You are fearfully and wonderfully made in His image. He has empowered and equipped you with everything you need for abundant living. So start walking like it.
As you begin to embrace your own worth, you'll notice a shift in the response you get from others. Remember, you train folks how to treat you. Don't ever forget that.
Here's something to chew on: The treatment you receive at the hands of others is a direct reflection of the signals you give off. Hmmm... So, what message do you think you've been sending lately?
If it's the wrong one you can change it. If, by chance, you know you've found yourself in the doormat position much too often, it's time for you to get up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.
Ask God to help you see yourself in the light of His word. When that happens, you'll never be the same again.
As always, thanks for reading, and until next time... may you be empowered to prosper!
